What I have learned from this assignment and the reading is that creativity is a skill that needs to be practiced and developed just like any other – and it is use it or lose it. I also have learned that creativity is more likely to occur when a person finds the connections between two pieces of knowledge that may seem completely unrelated. For example, the song above is a mix of my learning from the article and a hymn that has been an important part of my life. For me, this hymn works because it was originally written for congregations to create additional verses and I have recreated this song previously into lullabies for my children. As a result, I was able to create something entirely new by making those connections between my new learning and my past experiences. Taking this into my professional life, it emphasizes my already held belief that providing students with experiences is the most important thing we can do. If a student’s world consists of home and school, they have a very limited resource base from which to draw when learning and creating.
